Facilitating Leadership for The Royal Bafokeng Nation

South Africa
2007

The Royal Bafokeng Nation is a tribal community situated about 200km North West of Johannesburg. They own tracts of tribal land, and are relatively unique as tribal land owners, as they managed to hold on to this land throughout South Africa’s Apartheid regime.

Key leaders of the RBN are the traditional headmen and councilors. The King of the Bafokeng, Kgosi Leruo Molotlegi, has recently created and committed to a long-term plan to build infrastructure and a societal fabric in order to build prosperity amongst the RBN. Many of its people live semi-rural existences, with little means to create a more opportunities for themselves.

We are working with RBN to understand and develop the ability of RBN leaders to shift the system in which they operate. Kgosi Leruo Molotlegi highlights leadership traits such as wisdom, humility, dignity and a sense of self beyond the office one occupies. Headmen and councilors have their own views on how to benefit of the Royal Bafokeng Nation, specifically and the country as a whole.

We are using a dialogue methodology based on Lekgotla tradition to create a common purpose and understanding around leadership between headmen, councilors and other key stakeholders. We are also focusing on the development of social innovation abilities, including the inner or personal skills as well as the social tools for designing and stewarding social innovation.
